Description

The small chapel, founded in 1545 by the Brotherhood of Saint Joseph of Carpenters, became the parish seat in 1567, having been extended in the 17th Century and rebuilt after the 1755 earthquake. In the façade, the medallion over the portico has a bas-relief image of the patron, flanked by the symbols of the Brotherhood crafts. In the Baroque interior, the highlights are the 18th Century tile wainscoting, the 19th Century painting of the ceiling of the nave depicting Saint Joseph and the Angel and the marble altarpiece of the chancel. The church housed the important Casa dos Vinte e Quatro [the “House of the Twenty-Four”], a historic institution that acted as the decision body of the municipal administration composed of representatives of the craftsmen’s guilds.
