Description

The primitive church of Saint John the Baptist was dedicated in 1266 by the Bishop of Lisbon, Mateus; the works carried out from the 16th Century onwards gave the church its current aspect, notwithstanding the profound intervention during the first half of the 20th Century. Its Mannerist portico is the entrance to an interior where the gilded wood carved altarpieces of the (Mannerist) chancel and of the (Baroque) side-aisle altars should be pointed out, also with tile ashlars composed of chequered tiles and modern figurative tiles. The tile panels portraying historical episodes, by Oliveira Bernardes, in the baptistery and the silver reliquary with the crane of Saint Brigid of Ireland in one of the side-aisle chapels are also noteworthy.
