Description

Built in the Neogothic style, according to the plan by Vasco Morais Palmeira, the Church of the Saint Constable, Saint Nuno of Santa Maria, was dedicated in 1951. In the main façade, the royal coat of arms of the second dynasty is noteworthy and, in the portico, the highlight is the sculpture group by Leopoldo de Almeida, with the figure of Saint Nuno flanked by angels and the images of Our Lady of Mount Carmel and Saint George. Inside, the stained glass windows are by Almada Negreiros, the fresco of the chancel representing the apotheosis of Nuno Álvares Pereira is by Portela Júnior and, under the altar, the tomb containing the relics of the patron is by Domingos Soares Branco.
