Description

This church belongs to the most ancient Convent of the Irish Dominicans in the world, founded in 1639, to host Irish nuns escaping from persecutions; the church was dedicated in 1670. The portico of the main façade, with the image of Our Lady in a niche, is the entrance to an eight-sided temple, where the highlights are the altarpieces of the chancel, in marble and jasper stone, with paintings by Bento Coelho da Silveira and a magnificent silver tabernacle topped by a royal crown also in silver, as well as the gilded wood carved altarpieces of the side-aisle altars. The two choirs, with the respective choir stalls, the carved altars and the tile covering are also noteworthy.
