Description

The church of the ancient Monastery of Our Lady of Quietness, usually known as the Monastery of the Flemish, because it has been founded in 1582 by Clarissa nuns from Holland, under the sponsorship of King Filipe I. Combing the Mannerist original plan with some Baroque elements, it shows a simple façade, which is the entrance to a remarkable interior with tile ashlars portraying historical episodes and the polychrome wood carved altarpieces. Other than the nave and the choir, the ante-choir is particularly interesting, covered with paintings by Bento Coelho da Silveira with gilded wood carved frames and with the tile ashlars.
