Description

The ancient hermitage was located in the Saint Julian’s Church yard and was founded in the 13th Century by a married couple from Guimarães who chose the invocation of Our Lady of the Olive Tree (Oliveira). Located in the commercial heart of the city, the chapel hosted the Brotherhood of Confectioners (Irmandade dos Confeiteiros). With a discrete, almost imperceptible façade, the chapel is framed within the geometric urban plan of the Downtown. The nave ceiling shows a painting of the Assumption of Our Lady and the walls are decorated with tile panels showing episodes from the life of the Virgin. The chapel hosts an image of Our Lady of Oliveira, as well as a statue of Saint Rita of Cassia of great popular devotion.
