Description

Dedicated to the Holy Wounds of Christ and to Our Lady of Pity, the church is an 18th Century reconstruction of the hermitage of navigators, erected in front of the river since the time of the Discoveries. The interior is decorated with marble in strong colours and the ceiling has a painting representing the Pietá, by Francisco de Figueiredo. The chancel hosts a sculpture of Our Lady of Pity, which is highly worshipped. In the church’s steeple, a weathercock with a big marine dragon topped with the Cross of Christ is the fruit of the fantastic imagination of the 16th Century.
