Description

A hermitage devoted to Saint Sebastian was built on this site in 1505; after the deadly plague in 1569, which killed thousands, the people of Lisbon placed in the chapel a statue of Our Lady of Health. The chapel underwent renovation works after the 1755 earthquake, but kept the portico from the beginning of the 18th Century, attributed to João Antunes. The chancel is decorated in gilded, green and white woodcarving, Rococo style, hosting a statue of the Patroness in the altarpiece. The procession in honour of Our Lady of Health is one of the most important in the city since the 16th Century.
