Description
The original Church of Our Lady of Assumption was built in the 16th century. After the 1755 earthquake, it was rebuilt and reopened in 1758, hosting also the parish of the Resurrection of Christ. Highlights of the interior include the 18th century tile pannels depicting episodes of the life of the Virgin Mary; the Assumption of Our Lady painted in the dome by José Malhoa in 1900, by order of Queen Amélia; the 17th century tile frontal of the side altar dedicated to Saint Michael; and a 18th century Last Supper painted by Pedro Alexandrino in the chapel of the Blessed Sacrament.
