Description

The church is a post-earthquake total reconstruction of a primitive temple from 1566, constituting one of the best examples of the Pombaline style religious architecture. The interior is totally covered of white, pink and blue stone in a Roman style. In the ceiling of the nave, there is an impressive oil on canvas painting in perspective, representing the Apotheosis of Saint Paul, by Jerónimo de Andrade; in the ceiling of the chancel, the decoration in stucco was made by Giovanni Grossi. The paintings in the side-aisle chapels were made by Pedro Alexandrino.
