The church of Saint Joseph has been planned and built within the social housing project of the Boavista Quarter, which was inaugurated in 1941 by Marechal Óscar Carmona and Cardinal Cerejeira. This was one of the first social housing projects to be built for the more deprived populations. The simple church became the parish seat in 2003.
