Description
The current church was totally renovated between 1733 and 1740, by Manuel da Costa Negreiros, on the site of the 12th Century ancient temple. The octagonal church shows, in the interior, the altarpiece of the presbitery topped by the group of sculptures representing the Crucified Christ surrounded by angels, by José de Almeida, which was the wooden model for the one made in marble for the Basilica of Mafra. The beauty of its churchyard, with the famous 18th Century wayside cross over the river Tagus, has been sung by fado singers.
