Description

Erected immediately after the reconquest of Lisbon, in 1147, on the site where the city’s central mosque was located, the current building is a post-earthquake reconstruction, reopened for worship in 1776, in the Baroque and Neoclassical styles. Its bell tower lies on a tower of the citadel of Saint Jorge Castle. The chancel shows a sober wood carved altarpiece framing a 17th Century wooden painting, from the destroyed Hermitage of the Holy Spirit, and a 15th Century polychrome Ançã stone image of the Trinity, also from the same Hermitage. The Brotherhood of Saint Jorge, of great relevance in older times, had its seat in this temple.
