Description

Dedicated in 1938, this church was the first one to be built after the Republic and also the first one in a Modernist style, after the plan by architect Porfírio Pardal Monteiro. A few great plastic artists of the mid-20th Century have worked in this church: Almada Negreiros in the stained glass windows and in the mosaics of the baptistery, Lino António in the frescos of the triumphal arch, Francisco Franco in the apostolate over the portico, Leopoldo de Almeida in the image of the patron. In 1938, the church was awarded with the Valmor Prize. The church has a wide collection of sculptures by Maria Amélia Carvalheira, from which the nativity is permanently exhibited in one of the aisles of the transept.
