By order of King João V, in fulfilment of a vow, the majestic ensemble composed of the Palace, the Convent of the Congregation of the Oratory Fathers and the Church of Our Lady of Needs was built between 1743 and 1750, on the site where already existed a hermitage devoted to the image of Our Lady with the reputation of being miraculous. The statues by José de Almeida and Alessandro Giusti, both in the magnificent frontage with porch and in the interior, the baldachin with the gilded wood carved throne of the chancel, and the image of the patron are also noteworthy. The temple has a Pietá, a statue of quality from the ancient Monastery of the Sacrament of Alcântara.
