Description
The church, built in the beginning of the 18th Century to be the parish church of Encarnação, was renovated after its collapse and fire caused by the 1755 earthquake, in the Baroque and Rococo styles. In the façade, we can find two 17th Century sculptures which were taken from Saint Catherine’s Door, in the King Fernando’s city walls. Inside, we highlight the magnificent image of Our Lady of the Incarnation by Machado de Castro, over the chancel altarpiece, as well as the paintings on the ceilings, both the chancel ceiling, with a remarkably dramatic representation of the Mystery of the Incarnation, and the nave ceiling, depicting Our Lady of the Annunciation. Close to the main entrance, we can find a contemporaneous art chapel devoted to Saint Maria Goretti.
